Hagger’s Classical Odes presents the first four-book odes since Horace. In more than 300 odes he catches the mood of our time: dismay at the end of the Great Britain of Churchill and Montgomery, and awareness of a new Europeanness and globalism that are replacing traditional national feeling.

Hagger has written two poetic epics. Overlord, the Triumph of Light 1944–45, is the first major poetic epic in the English language since Milton’s Paradise Lost. In the tradition of Homer’s Iliad and Virgil’s Aeneid it describes the last year of the Second World War, from D-Day to the fall of Berlin and the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Its hero is Eisenhower, and so this is as much an American epic as an English epic.

Armageddon, an Epic Poem on the War on Terror and of Holy-War Crusaders, describes President George W Bush’s struggle against the Islamic extremism of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda from September 11 2001. It covers the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. The title ‘Armageddon’ refers to the news confirmed by Hans Blix of the IAEA in 2004 that bin Laden had purchased at least 20 nuclear suitcase-bombs.

As the hero is George W Bush this is as much an American epic as an English epic.

Nicholas Hagger is a well-known poet, writer, literary author, man of letters, historian and philosopher. He has written in a number of genres, including poetry, epic poetry, verse plays, short stories, essays, history and philosophy. He has had forty books published. His literary works comprise nearly 1,500 poems, more than 300 classical odes, two poetic epics, five verse plays and more than a thousand collected stories. He has also written autobiography, diaries, and travelogues which are also eyewitness history. 

His historical work of history presents a model of rising and falling civilizations, and a law of history. He considers whether all civilizations will pass into one international civilization for a while. His four historical investigations into contemporary world history caution against elitist organizations that influence world events through revolutions. In international relations/statecraft, in a work of political philosophy he has outlined a plan for a democratic World State.

His comparitive religion presents the essence of the world’s religions, the inner Light which is common to all. His philosophy, Universalism, moves away from modern philosophy’s focus on logic and language and identifies a law of order in the universe, which seems to pre-date the Big Bang. He sees the Void as a plenitude rather than an emptiness. His literary, historical and philosophical works are cross-disciplinary and interconnected.
